Hi folks,
Why have I posted so much on this website lately? Could it be that there's not a fucking thing to do in this town, or is the loneliness setting in?..probably the latter.
Anyways, a few posts back, my "Fletcher's Review", in fact I stated, quite erroneously that my ears (obviously flawed) told me Bitter Tree (for the guitar players out there..Hi PRH) was in double drop-D tuning or some such nonsense.
Well, when I went home to listen to it again, I found out differently. The live Raleigh concert gave it away, 'cos I hear David strumming an open tuning, which I am quite sure is OPEN C (CGCGCE). I know a lot of players use that, and it has some lovely textures, though with the string tension so low on the high gauge strings you've gotta be careful with finger pressure. Using a slide, it gives that Kottke type whine, that I,personally do not really care for..but for fingerstyle, it can add different dimensions that open up a few doors. I use drop-D, double drop D, DADGAD, DADEAD, and a new one I've discovered quite by accident that has an awesome blues sound EADEAD, aside from standard tuning. There are so many tunings out there. Listening to Michael Hedges (may he rest in peace), William Ackerman, Adrian Legg,Preston Reed (ouch), and my favorite, Pierre Bensusan, can really open new worlds. I get baffled by too many tunings, so I have stuck to the "D" related stuff and DADGAD, after I took some courses with Pierre. Any pickers, pluckers out there, please, your thoughts, tunings, leanings etc...are more than welcome. And David, thanks for yet another way..
