Icon Strange Bedfellows...weird openers I've seen

Camper Van Beethoven supporting REM on the "Life's Rich Pagaent" tour.  (both acts were amazing!!!)

The Rainmakers (local heroes on Mercury Label that sound frighteningly similar to my band) opening for RUSH, Hold your fire tour.  Label mates explains that one.  Actually, come to think of it, every Rush opener that I've seen were weird...including Blue Oyster Cult, Primus, Mr. Big.  The biggest treat was seeing Eric Johnson open for them in the spring of 1992 (I think)

This one's bizarre...Bad Religion OPENING for Blink 182.  I love Bad Religion and will pay large amounts of money and will endure throngs of blathering poseur punks to see them but could not stomach the indignity. Yes, blink 182 are tight as a snare drum but I just don't see the substance.  I'd be happy if my band sounded that tight.  We're practicing.

Let's see...David Byrne had some local acoustic guitar players droning on before him...this is why I got so drunk.

Most Ecclectic:  The Persuasions (a cappella doo wop) opening for Rat Dog (Bobby Weir Rob Wasserman).  The persuasions did an all Grateful Dead set and it was incredible.  Then, the Last Song they did was "The Meek Will Inherit Nothing" by Frank Zappa.  I was the only one in the crowd that I could see that was singing along.  Mr. Zappa produced some records for them in the 60's-70's and they are fabulous!

Oh...one more.  A local no name comedian opening for Joe Satriani. 45 minutes of bad jokes about Local Serial Killer, Bob Berdella. I had free tickets and it was at the Uptown theatre in KC.  My date (the woman who got the tickets) was 25...I was 18 so I wasn't able to get on the floor because they had bars down there.  Us kids were relegated to the balcony.  Mr. Satriani was two hours late and I was so hungry and tired by the time Mr Satriani got onstage, I just didn't care anymore.  Of course, my date was no consolation as she caught another ride home that night (insert your own sexual innuendo here) and from then on, we only went places as friends.

That last paragraph was a pleasure to write.  I wish I could get a job writing about entertaining subjects rather than Logging Notes.

Sincerely,

PRH
