They moved this weekend's protest to Public Square (the center of town) and the time to 4-6 pm. The Chagrin & Strongsville protests are still at 12-2 pm, and the hope is that they will come downtown and swell the later protest. I'm kinda split on this - the local protests split resources and don't give the government a large target but if we don't have a large presence will anybody listen? Media coverage continues to be spotty.
A word about the government response/police presence. The 5th protest had about a dozen or so cops in traffic vests on the streets, Cruisers went through every so often. The cops on the street just focused on crowd control and traffic flow. Interactions were cordial for the most part (there's always an asshole or two to deal with). One magat drove through, stopped at the red light - a few people went into the street to harangue him - the light changed and he drove on, no big issue.
So now we get to the lack of a black presence, which I fully understand and support. If this was a BLM crowd, at the very least, the SWAT van would be parked down the block, ready to deploy the tactical gear and riot shields. I'm ok with this going forward, but I'm wondering what will happen when the brownshirts eventually show up. Who will the cops respond to - in what way?
There will be confrontations down the road, where and when is still up in the air. Kent is not far away, (less then an hour down I-480) and it still hangs in the zeitgeist of the area. There is still a presence of people who wear black on May 4th as a silent acknowledgment of the event. Still stories in the local media every year. I'd characterize the mood as watchful waiting.
