I've Been monitoring live feeds and various news reports and have noticed some patterns.
1.) The organized protests have been peaceful and orderly - there were some agitators starting on Saturday afternoon, but the organized people distanced themselves from them. Whether these agitators are black block, proudboys or just lookie loo's on instagram is unknown and irrelevant, but they are the problem. The cops are dealing with them. As the day wears into night, the crowd seems to reduce to locals with a grudge. With the history of LAPD engaging in profiling and harassment of certain ethnic young men (which happens in any city or police force anywhere in the US), we have crowds of them looking for an opportunity for payback, and we are getting that. I sympathize with the cops being forced to deal with a situation created by outside forces, but they have their piece of this as well.
2.) The National Guard and Marine deployment is an overreaction to be sure. What I have noticed is that they have not left federal property at all. The only time they went into public space was to move the crowd back to allow a convoy of police and government SUV's access to the detention center - after the convoy was in, they moved back to the driveway. This tells me tRump knows he's on shaky legal ground and the military commanders are giving him the side eye. I'm not sure the brass will allow the troops to go into public spaces if that command is given.
The tension seems to have abated for now, but if Miller and tRump start raids again, all bets are off.
