For comedy/gore and complete gross out the King of the hill is Peter Jackson's DEAD ALIVE. It tops Evil Dead (part 2 especially) by the slightest of margins.
Shadow of the Vampire (Willem DaFoe in a role he's born to play)
Near Dark
House on Haunted Hill & The Haunting (The B&W originals)
Carnival of Souls
Re-Animator
And of course ALIEN
I always find a quality portrait of a descent into madness , riviteing.
Donny Darko
The Shinning
Vampire's Kiss (Great underrated Nicholas Cage flick)
