-----draft letter-----

To: Norman Solomon in the matter of Katharine Gun

Today's Date

This letter is written in support of the courageous actions of former British intelligence employee Katharine Gun, who is facing up to two years in prison for violating the Official Secrets Act in the UK when she disclosed a top-secret NSA memo in March.  The documents outlined a surveillance operation run by my country at the UN,  where Security Council members were subjected to wire taps prior to their vote on Iraq.  The Observer exposed this surveillance operation directed at United Nations Security Council members.

I support Ms. Gun's actions to expose illegal actions by American politicians and to bring to light their deplorable efforts to dominate the UN Security Council.  This was not a matter of politics, but of legalities, rights, and fairness.  All of the members of the UN community deserve to operate in privacy and to take their votes and discuss important matters without pressure of espionage or interference from the United States.

I further direct this letter to anyone involved in prosecuting Katharine Gun, that they might realize that people are aware of her trial, will expect fairness, and will expect that she be treated respectfully throughout any legal process she must go through.  American and British authorities should know that many Americans will be monitoring this case.

To urge any type of jail or punishment by fine against Katharine Gun would send the wrong message to both the American and British intelligence communities at an important time in our history.   In America, thousands of people were impacted by corruption at the Enron Corporation.  Ultimately, it was only through the actions of one courageous woman that Americans learned that their life savings and pension money was being stolen and mismanaged.  She came forward to disclose what was going on, and in so doing she protected us all from the consequences of insider trading and organized theft.  Indeed, the individuals who performed these illegal wire taps should be prosecuted.  People in the UK and the U.S. should be aware these wiretaps were intended to prevent the just operation of a system set up to decide on vital security matters that had an impact on millions of lives.

I want to take this opportunity to personally thank Ms. Gun for seeking to uphold the law and for her efforts toward justice.

Sincerely,
