There's a really touching photo of the two of them: Johnny and Joe in the box set liner notes. You know, I think that the Johnny Cash/Rick Rubin partnership was one of the greatest ever; sort of like George Martin and the Beatles. Rick pulled Johnny out of his failing career and late life depression and gave him the room to create again. In the process he made Johnny into a new American icon and together they produced some of the best music these ears have heard in years.
If you haven't heard any of their recordings do yourself a favor. The box set is way expensive but the CD "When the Man Comes Around" is a good place to start.
