The only way John Kerry can win this thing is if the Democrats take Bush performance after 9-11 away from him. They can't do that, so they are going to now try and convince people that if it was not for him it wouldn't have happened in the first place.
It's a losing proposition to say Bush was responsible for 9/11. That is the hysterical "take out Bush at any cost" perspective. The real issue is the Bush administrations performance following 9/11 and if we're going to be honest here...it's very, very questionable.
I'm not sure you guys on the right in here are willing to take that hard look at it though. Not in an election year...right? That's where our issue really is.
I don't want to blame Bush for 9/11. An honest look at that issue does take us back in time through several administrations. Not quite the way Ms. Coulter walked us through it but she had the right idea...she just left out all the facts. I really would just prefer to see Kerry beat Bush without having to see Bush impeached. I just think if that happens the ugliness and bitterness and partisan hysteria that would follow would be very damaging to this country.
I don't think there's only one way for Kerry to beat Bush but I do think that Bush, to some extent, needs to beat himself for Kerry to win. That may have already happened. Time will tell.
I think the big issue for the Kerry campaign is that there is not a huge pro-Kerry movement in this country. There is a huge anti-Bush movement though. Also I think...and this probably angers some Democrats...Kerry has run a very honest and reasoned campaign thus far. There are all sorts of attacks on Bush but the Kerry campaign is not involved. Personally, that works for me but I know a lot of people want to see mudslinging met with the same.
The Bush campaign has two things that they are throwing at Kerry and they are both false. One, that Kerry will raise taxes...really he only proposes to roll back part of the Bush tax cuts. Two, that he's weak on National Security...a total invention but it's part of the core of what Bush wants to run on so they can't let Kerry look good in that area. They have a serious problem there too, in that Kerry actually looks really good on National Security.
So, with a weak base to attack from the Bush campaign needs to find a way to define Kerry. That's what their ads are all about but the ads are full of falsehoods. Understandable to some extent because they are in a real bad spot with numerous investigations all taking place at the same time. It's quite a mess and this makes for one hell of a sloppy campaign.
