A band that to me sounded great through both the 80's and 90's and even now in the 00's is Los Lobos. All of their records still sound great. They are to me...the great American rock band of that time frame. They have also always continued to develop and experiment. The side projects they did were very cool too. I think if you take their catalog, including all the side stuff, they stand head and shoulders above the rest of the bands working in that time frame. They never followed any trends or any of that shit either.
