FREAKS AND GEEKS - DVD REVIEW (by Kent Daniel Bentkowski)

Freaks and Geeks represents the most realistic portrayal of high school that has ever been broadcast on television, ever. Since it was so realistic, and not merely the "wish fulfillment" as the NBC executives wanted, this is a must-have DVD for everyone who attended high school during 1980-1981, the years covered by the show. It was this realism that made it so great, but it was also the show's undoing.

I have had my copy of the special limited "high school yearbook" edition for about a week now, and this is by far, the single best DVD release so far --- and that is even considering how great the LOTR expanded editions were! This is also the single best and most appropriate DVD packaging --- eight DVD's encased inside a life-size high school yearbook.

FREAKS AND GEEKS only ran eighteen hour-long episodes, and in spite of that, this DVD set is the most complete and encyclopedic reference documenting this once-in-a-lifetime experience, just like high school really was.

FREAKS AND GEEKS comes in two flavors --- the 6-DVD set which goes on sale tomorrow for about $50.00, and the 8-DVD special limited fan edition, available for a limited time ONLY through the show's website, which costs $120.00 (link above). I can confirm that this is well worth the extra cash, as there are an insane amount of extras sprinkled throughout the six and eight disc sets.

I won't go into specifics, as all of that is covered in the DVD Talk review, the link of which is posted above.

However, what I will say is that this is the single most appropriate DVD packaging, considering the subject matter. Every single review I have read in the press about this set states that this is the best DVD set of all-time, a statement with which I agree 1,000%!

Also, for those of you lucky enough to be in Los Angeles tomorrow night at 8:00pm, the full cast and producers will be doing an in- store appearance at Tower Records on Sunset Blvd.

P.S. - For those wondering, the character on the show that most represented me in high school was the geeky Bill Haverchuck, played by the wonderfully gawky MARTIN STARR!

KDB Rating: A full five freaks and five geeks (A+) MUST-HAVE DVD!
