When I was a young teen, I was fortunate enough to live across the street from an old man who had been a Russian immigrant. For an entire summer I sat on this man's porch listening to how the cultures proliferated throughout Eastern Europe. It was interesting, alright.

So you are absolutely correct --- these foods filtered through, and were called similar things by people who thought they were unique to their nationality.

Same thing with the fried dough --- FASCHNACHTS --- well I spelled that one wrong!
