Actually I've heard about this several times. I think what Pat had said about this deal was true...they approached it all the wrong way. I think they should have begun by trying to establish some shows...Franken obviously being their "star"...and then see if they could gain momentum for the shows. They had a dismal plan.
As for why the media gave them such a big launch...that's simple...the media loves to celebrate the media...they'll blow up any media endeavor...plus I think there's the factor that these guys all sort of know one another and run in the same circles and they'll promote your deal if you promote theirs later...it's media politics...not left vs right politics at play there.
The story about them going down in flames is not a big story...they were tiny to begin with...plus more media politics...don't step on the toes of someone you might work with later...again I don't think this shows any "left wing bias" in the media...
