wow, that's one extremely well done DVD package.
i'm spending my saturday night with it, alone and sinking into a morass of resigned melencholy and bittersweet hopelessness...but i didn't exactly go into the Triage film expecting a popcorn-munching good time. still, so many striking images behind the music...db in the big concrete pipe doing Bitter Tree...a roach-strewn Nobody (with db's teeth needing a good cleaning)...and that solo Born For Love, tears streaming down my face at the vicious incongruency of the juxtapositions, mic catching every whispered nuance while the history of mankind goes on behind him.
in any event, db looks lean and mean in a suit with his hair cut short. dope shit.
other impressions:
babes in the Boomtown woods! db looked every bit the young Jewish kid he was.
great Arsenio footage, with db animated and toying around with the melodies (while the bassist's big hair fluttered)...
great shots of db in Dance, the b&w bits with the moving light projecting his shadow onto the wall....love the hat but am not too sure about the face paint & voodoo angle...well, he's a whiz with the glitter, i'll give him that.
only complaint with the Boomtown and All For You vids is - they cut the bridges! WTF? ridiculous; the bridges are great in both those songs.
the Austin show's performances were pretty good but it sounded under-attended, not enough energy from the audience to kick the band into a higher gear. camera work was good, though. also noticed that the kick drum vibrated the cameras in the Me and My Girl and Nothing's Gonna footage, but what're ya gonna do? damn drummers. (and i prefer Bill to JJ; they both play appropriate to the songs but Bill's playing is just more interesting in general)
and what's the tune that plays over the Special Features menu? it's got the Nothing's Gonna keyboard part in it but that's all i recognized. anyone? i know one of you nuts knows too much about it.
guess that's it for now. Dan, you are The Man. thank you so much for all you've done to make this happen. it's brilliant.
