If Lance should prevail, I would imagine he will have attained perhaps the highest athletic achievement for all time and for all mankind. To even complete the Tour de France is an ordeal in itself. To win once, a lifetime nadir for a trained athlete, and to win 6 times, unprecedented in human history. I don't know of a more grueling athletic challenge.
The last time I could marvel at such a feat, is when Roger Bannister ran the first four- minute mile. At the time, it was thought that the human physiology could not attain this pinnacle. Roger, himself a physician, believed that he could go where none had ventured before. Hopefully, Lance will cross another threshold of accomplishment.
Particulary in view of his battle with cancer, years ago, this victory will be not one for he alone, neither an American victory, but a triumph of the human body and soul. He is an inspiration to us all.
