This was very cool and I've never seen anything like this before. Last Thursday there was an object in the sky over the Twin Cities and nobody had a clue what it was. Apparently it was hovering over us for most of the day and all throughout the evening and into morning. I first learned of it later in the day when my brother phoned to see if I'd seen it...he'd heard about it on the news. I looked up and sure enough, there it was. It was a white, very easy to see dot in the sky. My first impression was that it was some sort of balloon and in fact that's what the news reporters were assuming it was. The National Weather Service said it wasn't one of theirs. The thought that it was a balloon didn't make much sense to me as I checked the upper winds and found that they were steady from west to east at about 60 knots all the way up from the mid levels to 60,000 ft which is as far as the data is reported. If it were a balloon, it would have sailed away with the wind. This object stayed steady in its location and drifted slowly toward the wind during the few hours I'd watched it.
The local papers had a small piece on it the next day but nobody could say with any certainty what it was.
Here's a video of what we took of it.
