Report: Sinclair To Air Anti-Kerry Film Before Election
Newspaper Says Stations Told To Preempt Local Programming
POSTED: 2:13 pm EDT October 9, 2004
LOS ANGELES -- A broadcasting group reportedly has ordered its television stations to air an anti-John Kerry documentary just weeks before the presidential election.
The
Los Angeles Times said Sinclair Broadcast Group is ordering its 62 stations nationwide to preempt local programming in favor of a program that features Vietnam prisoners of war who are critical of the decorated veteran-turned-anti-war activist.
The
Times said the program is expected to be broadcast the week of Oct. 21 and followed by a panel discussion to which Kerry will be invited.
But a Kerry spokesman said it is wrong for Sinclair to "strong-arm" local broadcasters and "air lies" to promote a political agenda.
Sinclair made news back in April, when its stations refused to air a "Nightline" show that featured the reading of names of U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq.
Sinclair called it a political statement disguised as news.
