No, but I did get a picture of a pig on a motorcycle. (I tried to post it but it's not working. I'll try & figure it out later) Vietnam would be, I suspect, a very difficult experience for a PETA person. And no Al, I did not eat any dog that I am aware of (though we certainly were served mystery meat on more than one occasion). I did see signs all over northern Vietnam outside of little shanty houses advertising :"thit cho" or "thit cay" which my guide told me was dog meat. I even saw several signs adverstising "thit meo". You can probably deduce what that is.... and where's Fluffy?
Ironically, and sadly, my own dog died suddenly while I was in Vietnam. He was almost fifteen, a Golden Retriever, and apparently had a heart attack or some other event. It made me think quite a bit about the incredibly different relationships we have with our pets. In rural Vietnam dogs are everywhere. They all seem to be of the same Akita-type strain; small with curved tails. They wander around people's yards and the villages rather like chickens. I never once saw anyone pet a dog or even interact with one. On the other hand I was never once chased on my bicycle by a Vietnamese dog. They just seem to keep to themselves.
Andrea, your question about Agent Orange is a good one. I don't know the answer. I know that one in four children in Quang Tri province is born with a birth defect and I very much suspect that our own government is neither active nor financially supportive of helping to clean up the mess. We're focused on another part of the world just now.
