Have we lost people moving overseas in recent years? Thousands, especially doctors, nurses and teachers. It was referred to as the brain drain. A few years ago, when bumper stickers were still in vogue, the most popular one was The last person to leave the country, please turn out the lights! If you have a parent or spouse with a British passport, getting into the U.K. is no problem. If like myself, you have only a South African passport, it's not quite so easy. My wife and I have been eyeing out Australia & New Zealand for a few years now (Be afraid Al, very afraid!) They are both beautiful countries, which from what I've heard are very similar to SA in climate and general make up. As I'm sure you are aware, the U.S. and Canada have very strict immigration laws.
I think the problem is not so much the violence per se, but the lawlessness. The police have a tough time coping, and people have little regard for the law. From the obvious things like the horrendous rape and murder statistics, to simple things like jumping red robots or talking on cellphones while driving (which is illegal here)
A sad fact is that we (like many other countries) have a high unemployment rate. So it would seem crime is the next step.
Having said all of this though, I feel like I have painted a very skewed picture of SA. There are so many positives, like a general quality of life which is hard to beat. The majority of people today (black and white)drive new cars, have new houses, and every electronic toy or gadget concievable. (Which I guess is odd, considering we are a developing country.) We have beautiful sunshine days almost all year, and the most beautiful countriside I can imagine. If you visit here as a tourist from the States or U.K., you can live like a king, due to the exchange rate (which is not as bad as the terrifying economy in Zim. My aunt and uncle living in Bulawayo say bread is about Z$500!.)
Not sure about websites, but I will do some homework and let you know!
