Well, tomorrow is supposed to be one of our most hallowed holidays, although in our current times it seems like the meaning of our independence has fallen onto deaf ears. Nowadays we have members of the predominate religious group claiming they are persecuted and being attacked, when they are the ones doing the most attacking and if you disagree with them you are Godless, a sinner or going to Hell. Nowadays we have a governement that is so fearful of criticism that if you question it, your patriotism and loyalty are immediately questioned, as is your love for this country. Again we find ourselves in a deeply political war created out of political reasons and to criticize the reasons and means of this war is to be called Un-American or a traitor. Nowadays we allow for the persecution of gays and lesbians simply because they want the same things everyone else wants - to live freely, in peace and as how they are. Which is even more bothersome because more and more everyday science is proving that sexual determination is not a choice. In return for wanting the same things every other American wants, they are said to want "special rights". For the life of me, I can't understand how wanting to live in a country where you are not discriminated against or attacked and beaten while wanting to make sure your loved one is taken care of with health care certainly doesn't seem to be a "special right" to me. As we turn into another American Independence Day and the selection of a Supreme Court justice, it would be wonderful for someone to be selected that truly believes in upholding the US Constitution. As others on the board have written about the decision that government can now seize a home for development, I fear for true American independence and hope some justice out there who believes in true, less intrusive government (not this bullshit about protecting business and making money, but for getting government out of our bedrooms and out of the decision making when it comes to our own bodies) will be selected and remind us what true American independence is and was about.But alas, someone out there will say the tired old, "this country was founded on Christian-Judeo standards" when instead it was founded by Deists and those wanting to escape the political, business and religious tyranny of those across the water. Happy Independence Day America.....
