I don't think any of your examples should have been given a pass, racially tinged humor is inappropriate especially from persons holding leadership positions.
The biggest difference between Lott and the others is that this last comment was one in a long line of comments and actions, stretching virtually unbroken to his high school days. I believe the comment was made to compliment Thurmond, but based on Lott's history I believe it is part of his belief system. He has a right to his opinion, but should some, who in my opinion, is a closet bigot control the Senate?
