I seem to remember a interview with Woddie Guthre, where he said he wrote "This Land is your Land" as a response after seeing a Bing Crosby movie where the centerpiece was Iving Berlin's "God Bless America" . He could not get past people who would get lost in feel good movies while all around them the country was collapsing into the depression and dustbowl.
