Well, um. For the record, I do make music, from about 1:30 pm
Sunday to about 2 pm friday, every week, essentially every day..
Come to LA and you can watch me. I may even enlist your services. I dont publicise on the board most of the things I do musically,
cause for the most part, it's not music you'd probably respond to.
Mostly no vocals, etc... In fact, I dont publicise much of anything,
cause I'm dead sick of people publicising stuff, unless it's a clearly
commercial type dealie. Which I havent indulged in on this board. Also, even if it is something you might like--like the stuff i'm
doing for "into the wild", or even the singing dinosaur music from
"URMEL", or the brutal metal/trance music for Allice Cooper and
Bloodrayne, or the stuff I'm doing for Pete Yorn or Jesca Hoop, or
the wierd ambient stuff for The Weatherman, I'm not legally
allowed to distribute it in this kind of format. I would be
immediately sued. People tend to want to make a living wage, and
having a principal creative partner on a project distribute the stuff
individually, gratis or not, raises a lot of eyebrows and lawyers
fees. True, the filmscore stuff nobody really cares about, but most
of that music was meant (surprise) to accompany film, and isnt
really intended for casual listening. (unless youre a full on film
music geek like myself.)
And It is true that I could just post my personal acoustic-based
music as I do it... plop it on the net, for your edification and
pleasure, but for some reason I'm not inclined to--call it a pattern
of withholding, or shyness, or laziness, or simply the desire to get
it done right before i bother with releasing it to anyone.. And, yes, I suppose I could try to transform this board into some
kind of personal self-promotion device, but I would be sickened by
that, and I assume Dan would be too, and I won't do that. My
biggest creative regret of recent years is releasing the bowdlerized
NFU stuff on a normal label. That stuff was supposed to live in
people's personal dark. "NFU" itself comes from "Not For Use", a
stamp put on master tapes at Capitol that arent supposed to be
released. So, in a kindly but pretty pissed-off way,
let me direct your attention to Townes Van Zandt, John Prine, Paul
Simon, Will Sexton, Bruce Springsteen, Pete Townsend, Conor
Oberst, Warren Zevon, Billy Bragg, Bruce Cockburn, Randy
Newman, Jimmy Webb, Bob Schneider, Bob Dylan, Laila Downs,
Elvis Costello, Pete Yorn, and a host of other people who are
actually in the business of doing what you seem to want me to do.
There are plenty of guys and gals out there strumming guitars and
doing their version of "telling it like it is" for fun and profit. And
sometimes I do that too. But, I'll tell you the biggest turn off about that whole troubador
life, aside from the endless hypocrisy and the shitty hours. People
think they own a piece of you, cause you shared yourself for
awhile. Others want to kill you for the same reason. Often, theyre
the same people.
