In My Room- March 2006
1. Iarla O Lionaird- “Invisible Fields”
Afro Celts lead singer strikes gold with his latest solo disc. Chris Martin, eat your heart out!
2. Lou Rhodes- “Beloved One”
Ex Lamb lead singer breaks our hearts with this haunting sublime folk record.
3. Arctic Monkeys- “Whatever people Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not”
Smart lyrics with smart delivery. Waking up the echoes of The Clash and The Jam. Makes me feel like a young lad again. Thanks boys!
4. Teddy Thompson- “Separate Ways”
Impossible shoes to fill for poor Teddy, but somehow he manages to make a beautiful folk rock record. Reminds me of a young Jackson Browne at his most mournful..
5. Clogs- “Lantern”
Atmosphere instrumental music. A great late night. Art Studio zone out disc.
6. Syd Matters- “Syd Matters”
French outfit. Contains both of their discs to this point. Great psychedelic folk sounds. Should be heard by more people.
7. Pinetop Seven- :‘The Nights Bloom”
Atmosphere with lyrics
8. KT Tunstall- “Eye To The Telescope”
Get a groove on girl. A younger, hipper, smatter, Sheryl Crow. I know she’s mainstream, but after two listens I was hooked.
9. Belle & Sebastian- “The Life Pursuit”
Their best disc since the sophomore “If You’re Feeling…”
10. The Guggenheim Grotto- “Waltzing Alone”
Can’t wait to see these guys this month in L.A. Still got a feeling this could possibly break it bigger in the states this year.
11. The Boy Least Likely To- “The Best Party Ever”
Brian Wilson meets Belle & Sebastian at a toy shop.
12. Sarah Harmer- “I’m A Mountain”
Canadian songbird makes a simple folk based song cycle as if it were recorded on her porch one Summer Sunday evening, loverly.
13. Hot Chip- “Coming On Strong”
Out there! Bleeps, beeps and bips.
14. Rosanne Cash- “Black Cadillac”
Powerful disc, likely to make year ends Top Ten. Her best since “Interiors”
15. Jackson Browne- “Solo Acoustic Vol. 1”
This disc made me fall in love with Jackson Browne all over again. Finally forgiven him for beating up Daryl.
16. Beth Orton- “Comfort Of Strangers”
Beth just makes me shake my head. This is a good record, better than the last, but what happened to that woman who could do no wrong?
17. Mugison- “Is This Monkey music?”
I guess Iceland has more talent than Sigur Ros and Bjork.
18. Charlemagne- “Detour Allure”
Madison, Wisconsin pop music collective. Strong disc, but not as good or varied than the Carl Johns’ debut.
19. The Go -Betweens- “Live At The Tivoli, Brisbane 08/06/05”
Live disc accompany the new DVD from the band that is a close to The Beatles in writing the most perfect pop rock song.
20. Eef Barzelay- “Bitter Honey”
Eef You Mr. Barzelay! What a total rip off. Barzelay over a half an hour a music for a louzy $15 price tag. The last track on the disc is unforgivable. He better bounce back with Clem Snide soon!
