Pick up James Fallows' "Declarying Victory" in the new Atlantic for one; then pick up the recent issues of Time and Newsweek where this exact topic is discussed. But for a few minor points, those outside of the US laugh at our foreign policy when it comes to idiotic phrases like this because it shows how incredibly ignorant our goverment is when it comes to issues outside America.For one, most all of these groups have different goals from each other - they are not necessarily about killing off the West.Additionally, lumping all of these groups together also gives the tiny fringe ones a dose of legitimacy equal to that of the larger ones (which is part of the tenent of terrorisim - i.e., to change things through terror).
