Okay, so here is my suggested strategy for the future:

First, we find an alternative energy source that is plentiful, environmentally sound, and perhaps even pleasant smelling.

Then, (and here comes the hard part), we give it away.  That's right, share the technology immediately, for free, with anyone who wants it.

What's that smell?  Why, that's the future you're smelling, son!  All nice N rosy, just like we like it!

That'd suck the air out of some terrorist sails, wouldn't it?  Oil is the mitochondria of the terrorist cell.
