I'll agree on the Petty, and add 2 artists I just discovered this year with albums that haven't been off rotation on my MP3 player:
Neko Case - Fox Confessor Brings the Flood
The Hold Steady - Boys and Girls in America
In addition, although I haven't heard all of it yet, the new Tom Waits compilation seems exceptionally strong. Hoping Santa slides a copy into the stocking.....
