In a week when DBIS has covered TV show reviews and the
Homeland Security ramifications of passing wind on a commercial
airliner, take a moment to hoist your favorite beverage to the
passing of a real bad guy, Augusto Pinochet of Chile.
Pinochet passed away in his bed-in his nineties- of natural
causes,
having evaded justice for his crimes against his countrymen and
humanity for more than three decades. Just like Pol Pot.
But anyway, he's dead. And that's reason enough to celebrate.
Pinochet couldn't have done it without Henry Kissinger (and really,
neither could Pol Pot come to think of it) but Kissinger is still alive,
untried for his crimes, and still providing advice for the Bush
Administration. Kissinger., in his eighties, will probably also die in
his bed soon, unindicted for his crimes against Cambodia and
Chile, surrounded by the people who love him and despised by
millions of people who still suffer for his actions.
Celebrate these little transitions. Put away a good bottle of
wine for
Henry K's demise or save up a fart to light up the world...
