Miles was a prick. Lots of evidence of that, both written and talked about.
His raspy voice was apparently some sort of vocal cord trauma from a screaming frenzy directed at a record company exec. He punched John Coltrane in the stomach at a gig once. He was an asshole IMHO, but a great music innovator.
