Just finished "The Road." It's a really good and powerful book. McCarthy must be one of the few who can tell stories and paint scenes with the fewest amount of words possible. (Sort of like DB's "Black Mamba Kiss" - "hair like rope".....)
Another book to try is George Pelencanos' "The Night Gardener." He also writes for HBO's The Wire. Great bittersweet crime drama. Think this would make a great movie..
