Listen, sorry for being crude, but my thought processs was that the horse was a breeding commodity. If the owners did not see it as such, it would be a disservice to the breeders and their investors. or at least that's what I thought. This morning on NPR - "The colt was not bred and US Racing rules do not allow artificial insemination".
By the way, he won the Derby by 6 lengths - the longest distance since 1943 - that's a hell of a feat.
As for the "Bambi" effect, That's a whole 'nother thread...
