I dont think intellectuals oppose capitalism. I think they oppose unregulated capitalism, and for many good reasons. The reckless spending and agglomeration of wealth and power that led to the Great Depression springs to mind, as does the First Great Age of the Robber Baron. Of course, we're knee deep in the Second Great Age now.
