You are right, of course, about the need for caution. And there is very little similarity between Imus' fratboy stupidity and the Swiftboaters' organized thuggery. And it's true that of the lot of personalities including Coulter, Savage, Limbaugh, etc... that Imus is actually the least egregious. But I remember driving around with Bek and one of his buddies and his buddy started talking a bunch of vile, racist, misogynist crap, and I pulled the car over in a fury, took the boys out of the car and said to his friend "I don't know where you're hearing this crap, but I can tell you one place you won't be saying it, and that's anywhere near me." And I said to Bek, "if you hear somebody talking like this I want you to tell him to stop. If he doesn't stop, walk away from him." I said this with my patented super quiet Menacing Dad forcefulness, and I think I scared the living daylights out of both of them. But you know what? It got the message across to both of them that it is not acceptable, at least not to me, and his friend... Is a little better. But he won't be talking like that around Bek anyway. We talk a lot about race and stuff, Bek and I. Not too long ago he asked me "why are most of the homeless downtown black?" And we had a long history lesson the two of us, driving around Skid Row, talking about stuff like slavery, and drugs, and labor laws, and despair, and justice. He gets it, and he's a damn good kid. But this kind of crap that Imus keeps pulling out of his ass, and the kind of crap that people even worse than he keep pulling out of their asses, well it needs to be shoved back down into the lizard brains of the feeble-minded, it needs to be returned to the category of shame.
