Not quite sure what we going to get out of that story, other than that the military likes "do overs" when things don't start well in their war games.

I would also judge that the lessons to be learned from that exercise were.

We are not in the gulf with one carrier, we are in there with five entire carrier battle groups. Small craft are not allowed anywhere near Navy vessels, and the crews on board have had orders to shoot anything that approaches without complete advanced warning. The US Navy has even gone so far as to keep manned .50 caliber machine guns on it's carriers.

When I was in the USN, we used to conduct renegade man drills. Someone was secretly selected to play the role of a madman, and then we'd play it out to judge our ability to react. One time during a WestPac, a particularly mischievous individual was chosen. He took over the torpedo room, which on that class of boat only has one entrance. He surrounded himself with captive crewmembers, and "shot" the first two sets of negotiating teams that approached him. Things were looking pretty grim, especially since he knew how to override the controls on firing the weapons. Luckily for the good boat and crew, our XO was a modern day Lazurus, and rose from the dead to kill the bad guy dead with what was alleged to be a pack of Marlboros. Whew!
