From what I've read and heard about the man, he probably did not want the publicity. He sees himself as a regular guy who is fortunate to be where he is and wants to give back when he sees an opportunity. Hell, he takes the subway when he's in New York - if someone recognizes him he just raises his finger to his lips and goes Shhhhhh - the person usually resects it and lets him go on his way.
