I know I have a copy of the film, but don't recall if it's Criterion or not. I'll have to check it out when I get home this weekend. I've done quite a bit of reading about Welles, and the behind the scenes drama with that film is fodder for great audio commentary. I don't recall if there has ever been a release that's more true to Welles' intent. There was a re-release of "Touch of Evil" a few years ago that cleaned up the print and added back in a few cuts. Nothing significant, but that film is so great to see projected on a big screen with a good print. As far as Michael Bay and the other Bruckheimer-ettes, that's a guilty pleasure for me. I don't mind shutting my mind off for a couple of hours every now and then, and those movies do a good job of filling the space. I'm actually looking forward to National Treasure 2, even though I'm quite sure the historical accuracy will be lacking. If nothing else the first one got my kids a little bit more interested in history (not to mention scheming to steal national artifacts). And that is hopefully the last time that I write a post anywhere that mentions Michael Bay and Orson Welles together.
