Yeah, I guess before, during, and after the South Carolina primary Edwards was getting all kinds of calls from other Democrats asking him to leave the race because they felt his presence was hurting Obama. The thinking being that Edwards voters would shift right into the Obama camp and Obama needed all the help he could get. I guess during the South Carolina deal the other two campaigns made job offers to his staff because people were so sure he'd be gone after that loss. The big pressure was from Democrats that support Obama and their desire to get Edwards out before Super Tuesday so that Obama could absorb his votes. There is no question he really needs them. I think Edwards and Obama actually do really like each other. I saw some odd things during the debates that seemed to show that Edwards was cooperating with Obama to sort of set him up so Obama could say things that would allow him to answer some of the Clinton attacks and make Hillary look bad. At the time I just thought it was funny because it seemed both of them did not like Hillary and they were saying "we're gonna take her out." I'm sure it did not run that deep but I think they did do it because both of them had been smeared by the Clintons and that was their way of shooting back.
I'm not sure what to think of Edwards VP talk. I get the feeling that Edwards would do whatever he could to help Obama win and if Obama asked him to be his VP I think he would likely do that and it would help the Obama ticket. I do think Edwards left the race with the specific idea of helping Obama. I don't think Edwards wanted to quit now but I think the pressure on him to get out and the direction things took once they hit Nevada made it pretty clear to him that there was not much hope for his campaign. Personally, I saw a shot of Edwards on stage after the Nevada debate and he looked furious and the look seemed to say "They just took me out, I'm done." and that was 100% right.
Now, where it gets really interesting is in the fact that Edwards is not offering an endorsement right away. I'm sure part of that is to maintain the appearance of remaining neutral but some odd things have been going on. The Clintons are well aware of what people think Edwards leaving the race will do to things and they have made their own moves toward Edwards. Supposedly the Clintons have tried to buy an Edwards endorsement knowing he would probably endorse Obama once he left the race. What seems to have gone on is the Clintons made some job offers to Edwards and I don't know about VP, I don't think the Clintons want Edwards as their VP and I don't know if Edwards would want to be their VP. Let's face it being VP in a duel Clinton White House would be about the most useless job on the planet as Bill & Hill would be running the whole show and their VP would just be expected to stay the hell out of the way. The job they supposedly offered him was Attorney General and it's a job Edwards would likely have some interest in because he could make some changes that really matter and fix something that is a major problem.
So, if you are John Edwards I guess you're trying to stay away from endorsing anybody before Super Tuesday and after Super Tuesday it may not matter. I think he has helped Obama by getting out and he helps Obama by staying silent. Edwards leaving is the biggest boost Obama could get. I think the Clintons would have loved to get an Edwards endorsement prior to Super Tuesday but my bet is Edwards told them no way. Edwards would back the Democrat in the general election no matter what so about the only way to stick it to the Clintons is to make them wait until they have it sewn up to back them.
Right now it looks like the Clintons are set to destroy Obama on Super Tuesday.
