Thanks, Peter. Of late, too many of 'em seem to be passing away. Beginning with Dan (the friend I first described a few years ago). Now, not a year goes by without losing somebody...friend or relative. Seriously, it has not stopped. The tragedy with Scott was, although ill, it was nothing I would call "terminal". He was just getting the day to day ups and downs of being on chronic dialysis, until there were some infections recently. Game plan was always just to wait for a transplant. He was having a terrible time in NYC, because as he became more ill, he lived with his girlfriend in the Hudson river valley, had to take the train to Manhattan and then a cab to the dialysis center. Their transplant waiting list was too long. So, wisely he moved back home to NC, near Mom, and much closer to dialysis (maybe a 10 minute walk or a mile from his house), and the wait times there were much less. We planned on maybe a transplant by summer. He had not been home more than 2 weeks when on a Sunday eve, he called his Mom to tell her he was very short of breath and dizzy. A doctor friend who lived across the street, came over immediately, and Scott was already unresponsive. All resuscitation measures failed. The cause of sudden demise? Likely a heart attack, or pulmonary edema...both more common in dialysis patients. Extremely eerie that after living in NYC for 4 years he returned home to die.
I was just listening to WPA last night...love those guys and thanks for your kind gifts. I wrote a song entitled We Don't Have to Say Good-bye, dealing with similar themes, around the time when Dan died, which was on my "Greatest Hits" (heh heh) CD I sent out a while back. If you'd like a copy, I'll ship her out to ya'.
