The "Stranger" soundtrack plays in my mind even louder with the imagery you have created:

"Three Hundred thousand men, all different all the same" (Women too...believe me).

There's this Lightfoot lyric taken from another context that also seems eerily a propos:

"And Many are the Dead Men.....too Silent to be real".
