Rosskol, I do appreciate reading your posts about the state of things down there. When you say you weren't surprised to see Maracaibo vote in the non-Chavez candidate, is that because Maracaibo tends to be in a bit of a "maverick" state anyway? If so then yes, surely the election of non-Chavez candidates in places like Caracas speaks more of a groundswell of support for a change in the leadership.
What, if anything, has been/is being done about the pollution of Lake Maracaibo? I was looking at some satellite imagery recently, and it's just appalling to see from space. And I recall reading something about a plague of duckweed that seems to be the new environmental enemy. Has Venezuela ever attempted to get places like Maracaibo to stop sending raw sewage straight out to the lake?
I wonder if any part of the Russian navy will venture into the lake. I wonder if a good look around would suggest anything to the Russians.
