I don't have the Zen restraint of Ed (no surprise), but don't take this as an attack on you, Mess. Maybe
you don't want to read it at all."What do any of us know about his [own] struggle?"He pretty much puts his struggle out there for anyone to see/hear. He seems to willingly engage in
behavior that will become the next night's punch-line for Leno or Letterman or Conan. And for
anyone to be vocal about the mindf*ck that is Scientology, well, they're just asking for it in my opinion.
It's one thing to believe in a centuries-old bit of mythology that strains credibility, but quite another to believe in a decades-old one that was designed to sell books and make money for the founder. If
Cruise and Travolta and Nancy Cartwright and Kirstie Alley want to jump on that bandwagon, good for
them, but they really shouldn't be surprised at the giggles. "Boston Legal" did a great episode on
Scientology, and it had me in complete stitches, all while (I think) being 100% correct in it's portrayal of
the lunacy that makes up this "religion".I thought Cruise was hysterically funny in "Tropic Thunder", and I liked "Collateral", "Minority Report",
"War of the Worlds", and "Magnolia", but pretty much everything he did from "All the Right Moves"
through "Jerry Maguire" is unwatchable to me (with the exception of "Interview with the Vampire"),
mostly because of his scenery chewing. I've only seen bits of "Last Samurai", and I'd like to see it all at
some point, it looks like a well made film--although I do agree with Ed's comments. Include "Dances
with Wolves" in that category. As a matter of fact, when the ads for "Samurai" started showing, I kind
of thought "Dances with Wolves" goes to Japan...The old joke goes :"...Tom Cruise? Yeah, I liked that movie where he played the cocky young guy
trying to get out from under his father's shadow." The shadow of his early career is going to hang over
my perception of him for a while longer I guess.Since I brought up Jerry Maguire...I love Cameron Crowe, I love every single film he's made...except for
this one. Maybe it's the casting (Cruise, Zellwegger, Cuba Gooding, Glenn fricking Frey), maybe it's the
annoying "SHOW ME THE MONEY" that was ubiquitous for a couple of years, but this one is like a big
fart at an elegant dinner party for me.
