Been years since I’ve read any Stephen King. Picked up his most recent volume of shorts, Just After Sunset, because his Intro made some good points about the art of “short story” writing. After the first yarn, I was hooked well enough to finish the book in a couple sittings. Nice thing about his shorts is King gets quick into the thick of it, not a lota harking back . . . or waxing poetic about baseball. Every story is worth the time --- not “horror.” Drama…yes, …Kafkaesque…perhaps, but with a rock & roll bent. Wouldn’t o’thought I’d be recommending a Stephen King read …but this is quality.
I mean there’s no denying (…well some denying, there’s always some denying, but not much denying) King has developed his imagination and observation skills as well as any philosopher past or present. He has a colorful perception of the human condition …but his niche is there in some dark alcove, with an old Underwood next to a Mac, writing pop fiction at the speed of sound. And it works.
I may revisit Different Seasons.
