I agree. There is the Steely Dan/Beach Boy gorgeousness and menace of "Secret Silken World." There's the wordplay of "Octopus Blues." Great drumming, too. There's the cool lawnmower sample done oh so musically in "The Waiter."There's the funky guitar and gut-punch lyrics in "AIDS & Armageddon."There's the sheer beauty of "Postman" which makes me cry every time. There's the horror of "Bitter Tree" with a hint at redemption. There's the taste of resignation in the nostalgia of "China Lake."There's a sense of uplift in "Brand New Morning."And more. And it's all so wonderfully played and recorded. The mix of personal tales and politics and
subjects rarely tackled in popular music is a special, special thing. In terms of melodic songcraft, I
probably prefer HCTNFU, but there's nothing I've ever heard quite like Triage. It left a mark.
