Hey, I brought up the idea (in third grade!) that maybe we shouldn't all be saying "under God" during the Pledge due to the religious freedom issues that we were beginning to study in school at the same time. And my mother was very religious, she taught us, and I had not personal beef with the language except that it seemed UNFAIR and hypocritical. How can a nation be "under God" and does that mean the others aren't? What about our family members, who lived in Iran and Ecuador at the time?You can imagine how well my "innocent" question went over . . .
