On NPRs Sience Friday they were talking to a prof @ MIT that had come upon a way (along with his students) to split water into O2 & H using PVC as a catalyst (much more reasonable than platinum). They're working on attaching the catalyst to a photoelectric chip, running the water through a panel of these chips and having the sun's power run through the chip & the catalyst split the water, store the Hydrogen in a tank and release the Oxygen. The Chips could still provide solar power while this was taking place to provide power during the daytime and the H would be backing up a h fuel cell to provide @ night. the excess being stored to fill your H powered car. Powers your home & car. No need for public power companys or gas stations. You would have to have a 500 Gal tank per household installed but I'm really digging this. PS. Plenty of hot water risidual too.
