I was playing a Gibson J-45 and a Collings D-10 onstage in those days, but that's probably a little out of range price-wise. I would look for a used (as opposed to vintage), student Martin, like from the early 2000's or late 1990's. It's very hard to find a good acoustic in that price range, though, and you may need to shop around. I'd say haunt the pawn shops, but pawn shop owners have gotten very sophisticated and tend to know exactly what things are worth. There are also some amazing bargains to be found on wonderful small-bodied guitars like the Gibson LG-1 series. Good luck.
