I think I've brought this guy up before, but he's worth mentioning again. Larry Brown passed away in 2004 at the age of 53. If someone wants to pick up good books on southern writing, he's a good start. Right now I'm reading "Fay" after just finishing "Joe." Fay is a sort of sequel to Joe. If someone likes the writing of Cormac McCarthy and Pete Dexter, he or she will most likely enjoy the writing of Brown. In 2001 a movie named Big, Bad, Love named after a short story collection of his was made starring Arliss Howard, Debra Winger, Paul Le Mat (the hotrod driver from American Graffiti) and Angie Dickinson. On first viewing, the movie may confound people, but anyone that has known a struggling artist will probably like it. It also gets better and better on additional viewings. There is also one of the most heart-wrenching scenes in the movie ever filmed. Give this guy a try; he's worth it.
