Milius and Mailer both seemed inordinately insecure when it came to their masculinity. They possessed a bravado that most males fortunately left behind in their high school locker rooms. I was recently thumbing through Clarence Clemons' autobiography, Big Man, and he recounts a fishing trip with Mailer. I know, talk about an odd pairing! Mailer questions whether Clemons thinks that Mailer can "take him" in a fight. Enough said.
