Wood Base, Cast aluminum platter. Direct drive is the best, Belt drive is acceptable on a high end machine, but they get wonky when they wear out. Very easy to replace, though.
A good S tonearm is about the best choice - there was a period when perpendicular tone arms were all the rage (No need for anti-skate) but those models need to have the worm gear replaced every other year, so they fell out pretty quick.
But the best advice I can give you is to find a reputable local dealer in vintage equipment.
A good condition, high end vintage machine will beat most of the 'new' Turntables out there.
And stay away from those ION USB turntables - Plastic crap. What model Technics?
