There were moments during the Bush presidency when I thought of Donald
Rumsfeld not as a person but a thing that was devouring all light, sound, and
reason like some super massive black hole. Looking into his eyes I always
heard Robert Shaw in Jaws "You know the thing about a shark he's got lifeless
eyes. Black eyes, like a doll's eyes. When he comes at you he doesn't seem to
be livin', until he bites you and those black eyes role over white and
then...then you hear that terrible high pitched screaming. The ocean turns
red and in spite of all the pounding and the hollering they all come
in...they...rip you to pieces."In Oliver Stone's film W. Scott Glenn plays Rumsfeld as totally out of his
tits insane...but really how else could you portray the man. There always
seems this growling, snarling madness there when he speaks. I'm not sure
there would have been a good way to capture it outside of playing animal
screeching death rattles backwards mixed with his voice.I admit this is a dangerous way of viewing the man and really it slips into
the irrational and superstitious...and I don't want to be irrational or
superstitious. Errol Morris has made a new film where he gets the chance to point his camera
at Rumsfeld and ask questions. I'm not sure if new insight will be gleaned
from this exorcise but it will give us all a chance to stare into those black
eyes that seem to emit nothing...just the dark... At the end of that clip Rumsfeld smiles...sends a chill down your spine
doesn't it?Also the film is being released as history seems to be repeating itself...you
can hear the pounding and hollering and you know things are about to turn red
and somebody is going to be ripped to pieces.
