Well, my first big connection was with Ray Charles when I was just a tiny
tot. Ray singing What'd I Say......kicked my ass. My mom said I grooved in my baby carriage to this. The
song still hypnotizes me when I hear it. When I finally saw the face of
Ray Charles I thought that must be what god looks like. Ray was hands
down my musical deity for many, many years. When I was about 5 I became fascinated with blues men. I would flip
through my father's record collection and Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf,
John Lee Hooker, Albert King, B.B. King, Freddie King...the three
Kings...and of course Robert Johnson...these guys all just seemed like
super heroes to me. Instead of leaping tall buildings with a single bound
though they seemed to be able to conjure strange primal grooves out of
the ether. This music never grows old, never loses the power or intensity
you got on the first listen, never fails to move you emotionally or
physically.Muddy
The Wolf
John Lee
Albert
B.B.
Freddie
